Special Stitches:

Split Single Crochet (ssc): Insert hook into the center of the upside down “v” of the next indicated crochet stitch, yo, pull through creating two loops on hook, yo and pull through both loops.

Split Single Crochet Two Together (ssc2tog): Insert hook into the center of the upside down “v” of the next indicated crochet stitch, yo, insert hook into “v” of next stitch, yo, pull through all loops on hook.

Double Crochet Spike (dc spike): Yo, insert hook into two rows below current stitch, pull through and pull loop up to the height of the current row, (yo, pull through two stitches) twice.

Notes:

*Normally a single crochet stitch is worked by inserting the hook underneath both loops of the crochet stitch.  The ssc stitch is simply a regular sc stitch that is worked by inserting the hook into the dense upside down “v” portion of the crochet stitch.  It may be a bit difficult to work at first but becomes much easier as the work continues.  Since you are using the “v” and not the top loops you will need to count the ch.1 turning chain as a workable stitch to keep your stitch count.

*Skirt is worked from the top down and features inner pockets at the hips.  These are created by working a foundation band and continuing with shaped separate front and back panels.  The panels are then joined in a continuous round to create the body of the skirt.  The lining of the pockets are stitched and seamed onto the wrong side of the skirt.  A colorful waistband finishes off the skirt with a button closure.
